This viki covers the nine starting scenarios, the difficulty modes and perks, rent and the buyout, all 17 endings, water, fish, wine and machines, Security and contraband, the Wanted list, appraisals and bargaining, the characters, achievements, patches and the roadmap, and key paragraphs play the moment on YouTube that shows it.

It was made by Questing Goose Studio, published by tinyBuild, and came out on Steam for Windows on Oct 28, 2026. It began as Bei Ning Pan's solo project, and within two days of launch it had sold half a million copies. The clip is Aliensrock buying and selling on Day 1 of the August playtest.

What Probably Stolen is
You are a former scavenger with a storefront, a loan and a landlord. You work behind the counter in first person, and people come to the window one at a time to sell to you or buy from you. Goods sit on a Resident Evil-style inventory grid, so every purchase has to fit as well as pay. Questing Goose names Space Station 13 and, a little, Papers, Please as its inspirations, and GameSpew and DualShockers both reach for Papers, Please too.
The point of the job is suspicion: cigarette packs need inspecting, water must be tested and filtered, weapons need permits, and rare items need appraisal, because sellers lie and a misjudged deal is your loss. See Spotting Fakes, Appraisals and Bargaining.
How a run works
Each day you open the shutter, call customers with the counter's button, trade, close, and pay for the night's services; after hours you can scavenge the Dumping Grounds or visit other businesses. Rent falls due every seven days and rises each time, and paying it is what keeps you in the game: see Rent. The win is Buying the Store, which on the Normal difficulty starts at 12,000 credits. The Beginners Guide walks through the first week, and How to Make Money lays out what pays at each stage.
Scenarios, difficulty and perks
You choose one of nine starting scenarios: Apprentice, Water Merchant, Fence, Gunsmith, Chemist, Hydroponic Farmer, Aquafarmer, Rat Wrangler and Rock Bottom. The Apprentice is the one marked for new players. Difficulty Modes sets your markup, rent growth and deed price, and from your second run on, Starting Perks let you trade drawbacks for advantages.
Trades and production
Beyond ordinary food and household goods, you can build a business around Water Trading, Aquafarming, weapons, chemicals, crops, rats or wine, each with its own profit curve and its own way of ruining you. The machines behind them are on Machines and Production.
Factions, Security and Augs
Six factions watch you: Lower Levels, Upper Levels, Security, Black Market, Revolution and the Sector 13 Cartel, and Factions and Reputation explains what they want. Security and Contraband covers inspections, bribes and hiding places, the Wanted List pays bounties for people you recognize, and Augs are the rogue AI hosts every faction agrees you should shoot. The named people, Lou, Eleanor, Officer Lun, Serpico and the rest, are on Characters.
The launch and what comes next
Questing Goose reported 200,000 copies in the first hours, 350,000 in 24 hours and 500,000 by Oct 30; SteamDB measured a 125,292 peak. The whole story is on Release History, Development History and Steam Player Count. Reviews and Reception gathers what critics said, Patch Notes lists every hotfix so far, and the Roadmap lists the free updates the studio has promised.
As of Oct 31, 2026, the game is three days old, so guide numbers here come from a few recorded runs and may move with the daily patches. Each is credited and dated.

Gameplay
- Augs
Augs in Probably Stolen are people taken over by a rogue AI chip. Signs are a visible chip, odd pupils, an uncanny expression, stillness, twitching, robotic or formal speech and an outfit that does not match their faction.
- Difficulty Modes
Probably Stolen has four difficulties: Price Gouge (Cozy), Mark Up (Normal), Thin Margins (Hard) and Red Ink (Challenge). They set your retail markup, rent growth, permit price and reputation gains.
- Factions and Reputation
Probably Stolen has six factions: Lower Levels, Upper Levels, Security, Black Market, Revolution and the Sector 13 Cartel. Standing changes prices and access, and -100 with most of them ends your run.
- Security and Contraband
Security in Probably Stolen inspects at random and builds a case from your crimes: 300 credits of evidence means arrest and 1,500 means execution. Hide contraband in a Smuggler's Bay, or bribe.
- Starting Perks
Probably Stolen's starting perks unlock from your second run. You get 3 points and 4 slots; negative perks add points. AllThingsHow's money pick is Savings plus Vigilant or Diplomatic.
- Starting Scenarios
Probably Stolen has nine starting scenarios: Apprentice, Water Merchant, Fence, Gunsmith, Chemist, Hydroponic Farmer, Aquafarmer, Rat Wrangler and Rock Bottom. Pick Apprentice first.
- Wanted List
Probably Stolen's Wanted poster has nine names worth 3,600 credits, from Lou at 1,500 to Arthur Lafleur at 100. Hold the teal Call Security button only when you are certain of the face.
Getting Started
- Achievements
Probably Stolen has 21 Steam achievements, from Lower Levels Special for using the labeler to From Nothing, the Hard Way, held by 0.4% of players on Oct 31, 2026.
- Beginners Guide
Start Probably Stolen as the Apprentice on Mark Up, keep 200 credits back for rent on Day 7, stock food, inspect everything you buy, and only report a wanted face you are sure of.
- Buying the Store
Win Probably Stolen by buying the deed from the landlord on a rent day, about 12,000 credits on Mark Up and rising, or by paying off the Loan Shark's mortgage. You can keep playing afterward.
- Controls
Probably Stolen controls: Q and E rotate, F flips, O shows hints, B rings the bell, Ctrl-click transfers, a drag selects many, and 1 to 9 pick tools from the Toolbox.
- How to Make Money
In Probably Stolen, make money early by flipping food and household goods and scavenging, then appraisals and the furnace, then water, wine, fish or batteries, and weapons late. Build one working business before buying more machines.
- Rent
Rent in Probably Stolen is 200 credits every seven days, rising 2%, 5% or 10% each time by difficulty. Refusing with no grace left ends the run.
Trades
- Aquafarming
Aquafarming in Probably Stolen means breeding fish in tanks, tilapia first and then eels and sturgeon, for meat and caviar. The studio calls it slower-paced and more beginner-friendly than Rat Ranching.
- Machines and Production
Probably Stolen's machines run overnight and draw power: the Furnace turns scrap and ore into ingots, the wine setup ferments and ages, Hydroponics grow crops, and a 3D Printer makes weapons.
- Rock Bottom
Rock Bottom is Probably Stolen's hardest start: no stock and no credits. Winning it is the From Nothing achievement, earned by 0.6% of players so far. GitM's survivor picked Savings, Sawyer's Crew and Vigilant.
- Water Trading
Water in Probably Stolen is graded by purity from Pure Water at 99.9% down to Gutterflow under 90%. Test it, filter or purify it, retest, and label it honestly unless you accept the risk.
Trading
- Appraisals
Appraising in Probably Stolen means valuing a customer's item from its guide for a fee. Join the Appraiser Board for 85 credits. GitM reports 20 credits' base pay, plus up to 15% for accuracy.
- Bargaining
Bargaining in Probably Stolen unlocks around Day 8. Offer Markup earns reputation; Demand Discount saves money and costs reputation; Blackmail works only on criminals; Threaten only on Augs.
- Customers and Display Case
In Probably Stolen, the display case brings buyers for what it shows, Neon Signs bring sellers, and Store Attractiveness runs from 0 to 1,000. Clean up to keep it up.
- Scavenging
Scavenge the Dumping Grounds in Probably Stolen after closing from Day 2, with 5 attempts a visit. Each risks a wound, so bring a bandage, and a late trip can cost customers the next morning.
- Spotting Fakes
In Probably Stolen, read the item's manual and check it under the Magnifying Glass. Hemingway cigarettes need the right lettering, logo, color and seal; Immunivax needs a seven-digit serial; water needs a test.
